Dom Harvey was brought up in a musical family. He learned singing, piano, violin, recorder and conducting from an early age. Through his parents and maternal grandmother, Dom’s early years were filled with music that ranged from sacred, gospel and classical through to The Swingles, James Last, The Beatles, Jacque Loussier, and folk music. From his pianist brother, Dom received his baptism into rock in the early 70s with Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple and Frank Zappa the main musical meals. After graduating the Sydney Conservatorium High School with an Associate Diploma in French Horn and Piano, Dom embarked on his musical career as a freelance professional in the early 1980s.
Dom’s musicianship is broad and inclusive and honed through considerable national and international experience. His career skills span solo and group instrumental performance, as singer/actor, and as music conductor/director. He has had the privilege to work with significant music industry names such as Tony Bennett, Sammy Davis Jr, and Luciano Pavarotti. Within the jazz realm, Dom has worked with greats such as James Morrison, Mark Isaacs, Jeff Harvey, Don Burrows, Don Johnson and legendary West Australian electric bassist Leigh Miller. In the entertainment industry he has backed Barry Humphries, Tommy Tycho, Kylie Minogue, Peter Allen and Christopher Cross amongst many others. In his time as a musical stage singer/actor, Dom starred alongside Australian greats Keith Michel and Jon Ewing in La cage aux folles.
From the late 1990s, Dom’s transformative period of musical activity has focused on musical direction and conducting. He was pivotal in the co-production of large scale choir and orchestra fire spectaculars with Neil Cameron to thousands of people on the banks of Lake Berley Griffin in Canberra. In the mid-2000s he met and immediately hit it off with the Zep Boys in their first performance with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra (Led Zeppelin Flies Again). Dom has collaborated on several rock and orchestra gigs with Tim Rogers (You Am I), Tex Perkins (The Cruel Sea), and conducted Queen, Pink Floyd and Beatles (All You Need Is Love) tributes. Dom’s passion remains in inspiring and motivating all manner of people, particularly youth, through the magic of music.
